Chapter 12

“What do you mean you can’t wake them up?” Damien looked to where his mother sat across from Sam and John’s unconscious bodies. “You did this to them!”

Though she had yet to explain how. Or why.

Damien had been all set for the hasty exit from the convergence, ready to collect Sam and Mathis and head north, when he’d seen his mother bent over two inert forms.

“No, they did this to themselves,” Alba spoke with authority.

“What do you mean?” He practically shouted the words.

“Sam can’t leave. And the Alpha won’t back off of his threat. This was the only way.”

“But they’re unconscious!” Damien growled. He loved his mother but at that moment, he wanted to shake her until her teeth rattled.

She didn’t respond. Rex was perched on her lap and she stroked the cat absently looking as though she didn’t have a care in the world.

He glanced up to where Jessica, Fran, Ivan, Jim, and Sally had gathered in the doorway, drawn by his shouting no doubt. “There must be something one of you can do to wake them up.”

“Not without knowing what’s wrong.” Jim, the shadow worker, said. He turned to Ivan who’s thick brows were drawn tightly together. “Anything you can conjure?”

“No,” Ivan spoke the same way he always did—briskly. “This is dark magic, old as the dunes. Where did you find the spell, Alba?”

“Spell?” His mother blinked up at the hooked-nosed conjurer. “What spell?”

“I can ask Gran,” Jessica offered.

“No,” Damien growled and she flinched. He moderated his tone so as not to upset the mother of his grandchild. “Bea has an ax to grind with Sam and John at the moment. I would rather not trust their well-being to her right now.”

“Gran’s a good witch.” Jessica crossed her arms over her chest. “And she’s not the one who did this to them.”

She had a point. Alba began quietly humming to herself. Was that Landslide she was singing?

“Easy now, little mama.” Sally put an arm around Jessica’s shoulders. “How about we go inside so you can rest for a spell? Put your feet up and have a cool drink. All this stress isn’t good for you or the baby.”

“I’m not an invalid,” Jessica snapped. But she let the kitchen witch lead her away.

Alba’s tune cut off and she rose as well.

“Where are you going?” Damien asked.

She blinked at him as though his question was ridiculous. “To set out breakfast. This is still a B&B and we have guests.”

She placed Rex down on the ground and then moved past Jim and Ivan and into the kitchen.

“She’s losing it.” Damien breathed. He scrubbed a hand over his face, over the stubble that was several hours past a five o’clock shadow. There had been signs, things that he’d observed but he didn’t want to consider the possibility that his mother was losing her grip on reality.

Had his reluctance caused this situation?

Fran, the hedge witch, crouched down beside him. “Alba has a reason for everything she does. Even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone but her.
